Most lists of the best things to do in Khao Yai ignore one important fact: the experience depends heavily on when you visit. A waterfall that thunders in September may be a trickle in April; a viewpoint that is perfect in December may be closed in August. This article organises the highlights by season. For a full directory of activities, see our things to do in Khao Yai page.

Cool season (November to February)

The most popular time to visit. Days are dry and sunny, nights can be genuinely cool and skies are often clear.

1. Catch a misty sunrise

Drive up to Pha Diao Dai or the Khao Khiao viewpoint at park opening and watch mist lift from the valleys. Bring a warm jacket.

2. Walk among the vines

Grapes are on the vines in the cool season, making it the ideal time for a tasting tour at PB Valley.

3. Go birdwatching

Comfortable temperatures make long mornings with binoculars a pleasure. Hornbills, barbets and migrant species are all possibilities.

4. Hike the longer trails

Dry paths and cool air make this the best season for guided hikes. See the nature trails guide.

5. Enjoy a warm pool or onsen in the evening

This is when a villa with a heated pool or private hot bath really shines. See our private luxury pool villas.

Hot season (March to May)

Temperatures rise, though the hills remain more pleasant than Bangkok. Crowds are lighter outside Thai holidays such as Songkran in April.

6. Look for wildlife near water

As the forest dries, animals concentrate near water sources and salt licks. The Nong Phak Chi observation tower is a good early-morning spot.

7. Cool off at Ban Tha Chang Spring

Clear, cool spring water is at its best in the dry months. Read the Ban Tha Chang Spring guide.

8. Spend the afternoons indoors and in cafes

Plan the hottest hours around the Khao Yai Art Museum and the area’s air-conditioned design cafes from our restaurants and cafes guide.

9. Watch the bats at dusk

The evening bat emergence near the northern gate is a year-round spectacle and a pleasant way to end a hot day.

Rainy season (June to October)

The “green season” brings lush forest, dramatic skies and the most powerful waterfalls. Some viewpoints and trails may close, and leeches are common.

10. See the waterfalls in full flow

Haew Narok and Haew Suwat are at their most spectacular. Wear grippy shoes and stay behind barriers.

11. Take a night safari

Evening spotlighting runs year-round and is a good activity when afternoons are rainy.

12. Enjoy the quiet

Outside weekends, resorts are calmer and it is easier to book popular restaurants. A villa with a covered sala lets you enjoy afternoon storms from the terrace.

Year-round favourites

  • Feeding animals at Primo Piazza.
  • Lunch at a Michelin-recognised Thai restaurant.
  • A spa afternoon at your resort.
  • Looking for gibbons, macaques and deer on an early drive in the park.
