Introduction

Thailand is not the first country that comes to mind for wine, but the high ground around Khao Yai has become the centre of a small and surprisingly serious wine industry. PB Valley Khao Yai Winery is one of its pioneers. Established in 1989, it was among the first estates to grow wine grapes on a large scale in Thailand’s tropical climate, and today it welcomes visitors for guided vineyard tours, tastings and meals.

Destination overview

The estate lies in Phaya Yen subdistrict, west of Pak Chong town, at roughly 350–380 metres above sea level. It covers more than 2,500 rai (about 400 hectares), with rows of vines set against the hills of the Dong Phaya Yen range. The winery’s visitor area includes a tasting room, shop and the Great Hornbill Grill restaurant.

Main highlights

Vineyard and winery tour

Guided tours take visitors through the vineyard and the winemaking area, explaining how grapes are grown and harvested in a tropical climate, followed by a tasting of the estate’s wines. Booking platforms describe the standard tasting as including red and white wines. Guests under the legal drinking age or who prefer not to drink are offered grape juice instead.

Lunch or dinner at Great Hornbill Grill

The estate restaurant serves a mix of Thai and Western dishes, from snacks to full meals, with views of the vineyard. It pairs naturally with a late-morning tour.

Wine to take home

The shop sells the estate’s wines and other products, making it a good place to pick up a bottle for your villa.

Best time to visit

The cool season from November to February is the most pleasant time to walk the vineyard and is when visitors are most likely to see grapes on the vines. Tours run year-round, but in the hot season (March to May) a morning slot is more comfortable. Weekends and holidays are busy, so book early.

Transportation information

PB Valley is about 150 km from Bangkok, and the winery says the drive takes under two hours on the six-lane highway, depending on traffic. From Bangkok, follow Highway 2 (Mittraphap Road) through Saraburi and Muak Lek, then follow signs to PB Valley in Phaya Yen. From the main resort area on Thanarat Road, allow around 30 minutes or more. The estate is not on a public transport route, so arrive by car or arranged transfer – and nominate a driver who will not be tasting.

Practical visitor tips

  • Book ahead by phone or through the official website, and confirm the tour time.
  • Do not drink and drive. Thailand has strict drink-driving laws; book a driver or transfer if everyone wants to taste.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and a hat for the vineyard walk.
  • Combine with lunch and a slow afternoon at a nearby cafe.

Nearby accommodation

PB Valley is on the western side of Pak Chong, while most resorts are along Thanarat Road. Any resort in Mu Si, Pong Ta Long or Wang Katha makes a reasonable base; see our luxury resorts guide and pool villa resort guide.
