Two days is enough to get a real feel for Khao Yai if you plan sensibly. This Khao Yai weekend itinerary assumes you are travelling by car from Bangkok and staying in the Thanarat Road or Mu Si area. It avoids cramming in too much, because distances are long and part of the pleasure is enjoying your accommodation.

Day 1: Arrival, food and slow afternoon

Morning: Drive from Bangkok

Leave Bangkok by around 07:00 to beat traffic on Highway 1 and Highway 2. The drive usually takes 2.5 to 3 hours. Stop for coffee in Pak Chong or at one of the cafes along the way.

Late morning: Khao Yai Art Museum

Begin gently with the galleries and sculpture garden at the Khao Yai Art Museum (reported open 09:00–17:30). Allow about 1.5 hours.

Lunch: Thai cooking

Choose one of the area’s well-known Thai restaurants from our restaurants and cafes guide. Arrive before noon on Saturdays to avoid queues.

Afternoon: Check in and relax

Check in, swim and rest. If you have chosen a private pool villa, this is when it pays off.

Optional: Primo Piazza or Ban Tha Chang Spring

Families may prefer a short visit to Primo Piazza or a swim at Ban Tha Chang Spring.

Evening: Dinner at your resort

Book the resort restaurant or arrange in-villa dining. Go to bed early – tomorrow starts at dawn.

Day 2: The national park and wine country

05:30: Leave for the park

Pack a light breakfast and be at the northern gate when it opens at 06:00. Pay the entry fee (foreigners listed at 400 THB for adults at the time of writing).

06:00–10:30: Wildlife, viewpoints and a waterfall

  1. Drive slowly and watch for deer, macaques and hornbills.
  2. Stop at the Km 30 viewpoint for the morning mist.
  3. Walk to the Nong Phak Chi observation tower.
  4. Visit Haew Suwat Waterfall.
  5. If open and time allows, drive up to Pha Diao Dai.

11:15 or 13:15: Winery tour and lunch

Leave the park and drive to PB Valley for a tasting tour (reported start times include 11:15 and 13:15) and lunch at the estate restaurant. Make sure your driver is not tasting.

Afternoon: Spa or cafe, then return

Either return to your resort for a spa treatment and late check-out, or stop at a hilltop cafe on the way back to Bangkok. Leave by mid-afternoon on Sundays to reduce traffic.

Adjustments

  • Rainy season: swap Haew Suwat for Haew Narok for the most dramatic falls; check for viewpoint closures.
  • With children: keep the park morning shorter and add Primo Piazza.
  • As a couple: see our romantic getaways page for extras.
  • Three days: add a guided hike or night safari. See nature trails.

Final tips

  • Fill up with fuel before entering the park.
  • Carry cash for small purchases.
  • Drive carefully after dark and watch for animals.
  • Confirm opening times of attractions and restaurants before setting out.
