Khao Yai has become one of Thailand’s favourite places for a romantic getaway, and it is easy to see why. It is close enough to Bangkok for a long weekend, the climate is cooler than the city and the hills are full of villas built for two. This guide covers where to stay and what to do as a couple.

Choosing a romantic pool villa

For a couple, the villa itself is often the highlight of the trip. Look for these features:

  • A private pool with real seclusion – walls or forest rather than a view of the next villa.
  • An outdoor bath or onsen, which is wonderful on cool winter nights.
  • In-villa dining so you can have breakfast by the pool or a private barbecue at sunset.
  • A view of hills, forest or vineyard rather than a car park.

Romantic stays to consider

  • Muthi Maya Forest Pool Villa – forest-set villas with private pools and salas on the Kirimaya estate. Official site
  • sala khaoyai – hilltop pool villas, some with private onsen baths. Official site
  • InterContinental Khao Yai Resort – railcar pool villas and the Orient Express-themed Poirot restaurant for a special-occasion dinner. Official site
  • Thames Valley Khao Yai – a pool villa designed for two in an English-garden setting. Official site

Compare these in more detail in our guides to private luxury pool villas and romantic pool villas for couples.

Romantic things to do in Khao Yai

Watch the sunrise from a viewpoint

Mist often fills the valleys in the early morning, especially in the cool season. Viewpoints on the road to Khao Khiao inside the park, such as Pha Diao Dai, are popular at sunrise. See our scenic viewpoints guide for timing and seasonal closures.

Lunch among the vines

Book a tasting tour and lunch at PB Valley Khao Yai Winery, one of Thailand’s pioneering vineyards, then take the long way back through the countryside.

Walk to a waterfall

Haew Suwat Waterfall is a short walk from its car park and especially beautiful in the green season.

Art, coffee and slow afternoons

Spend an afternoon at the Khao Yai Art Museum and its sculpture garden, then try one of the area’s design cafes from our restaurants and cafes guide.

Stargazing

Away from Bangkok’s light pollution, clear nights in the cool season can be excellent for stargazing. Many villas have terraces or daybeds that make this easy.

A simple romantic weekend plan

  1. Day 1: Drive up from Bangkok, lunch at a riverside Thai restaurant, check in early and spend the afternoon at your private pool. Dinner in-villa or at your resort.
  2. Day 2: Sunrise in the national park, a short waterfall walk, lunch at a winery, spa treatment in the afternoon and a long dinner.
  3. Day 3: Slow breakfast by the pool, a visit to the art museum or a cafe, then the drive home.

Tips for couples

  • Mention a special occasion when booking; many resorts offer decorations or cakes, sometimes for a fee.
  • Choose Sunday to Thursday nights for a quieter experience.
  • Pack a warm layer for evenings from November to February.
